Stuck between Blu-ray and DVD? Not sure which format to buy movies on for Christmas presents? Well, it looks like the answer may be just around the corner.

Universal are the first studio to try out a totally new concept – both formats on the same disc. The idea is that with Blu-ray on one side, and a traditional DVD image on the other, consumers will be future-proofing their purchases. For much less than the cost of buying both discs, you can have a circular piece of media which will still be worth having when you get around to buying that Blu-ray player (or PS3).

The Bourne Identity trilogy is going to be this new format’s first test subject, and will include all the lovely special features you could possibly want.

Each title in the trilogy will carry a suggested retail price of $29.98 in the US. While there isn’t any word yet on a UK release, if this idea catches on, expect many more flippers in the coming months…
