“There Will Be Blood” writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson has chosen his next film – and it’s going to be a film that isn’t about Scientology. Perhaps this is to avoid the wrath of Scientology’s dedicated followers, because the tale as it’s been pitched certainly sounds a lot like a story about L. Ron Hubbard’s movement.

The plot will go something like this:

Philip Seymour Hoffman will play the charismatic and intellectual founder (the ‘Master’) of a new religious organization in the early 1950s. As more and more people get interested and sign up to the new belief system, a twenty-something drifter named Freddie rises through the ranks to become the Master’s right hand man. But he starts to questions whether the organisation is really as brilliant and perfect as it seems…
